NY Times “Google, porn, privacy” article

By hotchic

After getting a helpful e-mail from a TA for this course, I checked out the NY Times article, Google Resists U.S. Subpoena of Search Data.  The article talks about how the U.S. government is looking to get information regarding what sites or keywords Google users are searching for.  Google does not want to give up this information to the government because it may put the privacy of their users in jeopardy and it has not been made clear to Google just how the information will be used.

I personally think that the government has no right to be able to look through Google’s records to see what users are searching for.  It does not matter what users are searching for, they can search for anything they want on their computers.  Why does the government need to see what users are searching for?  All it will do is confirm that a lot of people are curious about porn.  I do not think that there is any harm in looking at or watching porn as long as you’re not somehow hurting others in the process.

If you’re looking at porn in a public place, such as a library, I do think that that is a different case.  I was at the library over at ECC one day and these guys were looking at porn on the computer and there were some mothers in the library w/ their kids.  I did think that was inappropriate because what if the child had walked by the computer and had seen porn on the screen? That would have been an uncomfortable position for everyone involved.  But I do think that it is just fine to be involved with porn from a private computer and I do not think that the government should be able to monitor this or be able to search through records to see who is looking at what.

I agree that the goverment should not be allowed to search google’s site. We are lucky to live in America and have the freedoms we do. We can’t allow the goverment to take away our freedoms, even if it is the freedom to allow people to searh for porn on google. This is because if we allow our goverment to step on our toes in this area, then they will continue to step on our freedoms.

Nicely written discussion of the article. Well done.

I wonder, though… If someone is searching for child pornography you really don’t think the government should be allowed to monitor this. What if someone is going to google and searching for “rape 13 year old pictures.” You don’t think the government has the right to find out about this?

In regards to the child pornography I think the government should be monitoring those sites specifically that are offering child porn. Let’s face it, if its available for users to look at then curiosity may overcome some people and they may just want to “take a look”. Yeah it’s wrong, yeah it’s disgusting, but people are curious, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are disgusting creeps who should go to jail. So all in all, yes, the government does have the right to know what is going on with child porn but they should be dealing directly with the source.

I hate the fact the government is trying to control every aspect of our life. They continue to try to control the regulation of everything from movies, games, porn, and overall our right of freedom because without options, freedom is greatly condensed. In regards to the government trying to seize Google’s records, i strongly feel that this should not be allowed. People go on the internet for an seemingly infinite number of reasons, some good, some bad, however it will clearly be a breach of privacy if the gov’t is allowed to view this information. I agree with the fact that cautions should be taking to arrest child pornographers and many other criminals using the world wide web, but i think that they need to find a way to consolidate their ways of detecting such and that the public’s right to privacy should not be jeapordized. Anyway, it is a well known fact that child pornography is illegal, and im guessing the sites are discreet and that you can not just type in 13 year old sex and come up with a site that has such. In agreement with the main entry, private computers are just that private! The government should only be able to monitor something if they know for a fact that it is illegal, you can’t just storm into the thoughts and curiosities of every human being.
